It isn't uncommon for people to make errors when they are typing. So, it shouldn't be surprising that people sometimes make errors when they type in their email addresses to subscribe to your email newsletter. When this happens, your newsletters bounce back to you-rather than going to the subscriber.
To prevent this from happening, set up your newsletter sign-up process so as to require subscribers to type their email addresses twice. If the two addresses do not match, the subscriber will need to fix the mistake before the subscription is accepted. Certainly, there is a chance that potential subscribers may become annoyed with this process and decline to proceed; however, this process will save you more subscribers than it costs you...by far.
* Make it easy for people to change their email addresses. You want to keep subscribers, after all, and if people change their main email addresses, you want your newsletter to go to that new address. It is usually best to provide a link in every email through which subscribers can change their email addresses. Along with that, you should also have a place on your website with the same purpose, perhaps inside the newsletter subscribe box.
* Unsubscriptions are important, too. You don't want people to unsubscribe, of course; however, you must respect that people have the right to decide for themselves if they want to stop receiving your newsletter. Include a link in every newsletter through which readers can easily unsubscribe from the newsletter. (Actually, the fact that the link is easily available helps to prove your legitimacy, thereby causing less people to unsubscribe.)
Additionally, make certain that any unsubscription is effective immediately. If it takes a few days before someone stops receiving a newsletter they have asked to stop receiving, it gives off the impression of being spam.
You may want to think about different methods of getting email addresses-besides opt-in subscriber boxes. Try some of these ideas for getting addresses to improve your success at email address marketing:
* Hold a subscriber referral contest, offering both the referral sign-ups and the subscribers under whom they signed-up entries into a drawing with several prizes.
* Place a notice on your website that your newsletter always contains subscriber-only discounts and offers.
* Advertise your website on other related sites that are not direct competitors, offering a discount with a newsletter sign-up.
